Sometimes, people need go to court: for jury service, as witnesses, when they've been caught out. Celebs are no different - although their wardrobe choice are sometimes a little, ahem, unconventional for the occasion. We examine some of the most memorable * By Leisa Barnett
Tulisa Contostavlos "This time, Justin messed with the wrong woman," proclaimed Tulisa Contostavlos as she left London's High Court having successfully settled her case with ex-boyfriend Justin Edwards, who infamously leaked a sex tape of the X Factor judge and N-Dubz star online. She wore a mature-yet-stylish floral top teamed with tailored black shorts and a pastel blazer for the occasion - no messing, indeed. Linda Evangelista Linda Evangelista looked like she meant business in this natty navy suit and leopard-print stilettos, as she was seen exiting the Family Court in New York. The supermodel had been signing legal papers after settling her child support case with Salma Hayek’s husband, Francois-Henri Pinault. The model will receive £28,000 a month from the fashion businessman for the upkeep of their son, Augustin. Naomi Campbell In an assault-related outing to court in June 2006, Naomi Campbell opted for a simple black sheath dress and oversized sunglasses – a fashion blueprint of feminine staples she would refer to again for various later appearances. Paris Hilton Accused in a federal lawsuit of failing to adequately promote her 2006 movie Pledge This!, Paris Hilton wore a demure monochrome dress with black heeled pumps and a black Alice band – a fashion formula she’d come to rely on again and again. Cheryl Cole Oh dear. We bet the glossy Cheryl Cole of 2011 would do anything to wish away this court appearance - and the outfit she made it in. In 2003, the Girls Aloud star stood before a jury in a pair of jeans teamed with a pink shirt and matching jacket to be cleared of racially aggravated assault against a toilet attendant in a Guildford nightclub - but was found guilty of actual bodily harm. Lindsay Lohan In January 2011, Lindsay Lohan wore a figure-hugging white tube dress and bare legs for a court appearance. A risqué choice, perhaps – but at least she didn’t have expletives etched onto her fingernails, as per her previous hearing... Nicole Richie Nicole Richie arrived at court on the arm of her boyfriend Joel Madden wearing a structured black dress that daringly bared her shoulders in July 2007. The Simple Life star pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Kirsten Dunst Kirsten Dunst showed how it’s done, A-list style, last June. When the actress had to attend court for the retrial of a fan accused of stealing her $2,000 purse during a Manhattan movie shoot, she wore a simple black coat, ‘quiet luxe’ designer accessories and a sombre expression to side-step the paps outside. Rihanna For once, it wasn't Rihanna's style that had the world a-chatter in June 2009. The usually-flamboyant popstrel attended court carrying a satchel and wearing a textured black dress with a string of pearls to see her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown plead guilty to assaulting her. Katie Price In October 2007, Katie Price – or Jordan as she was more commonly known then – went to court to see her children’s ex-nanny, Joanne Hillman, go on trial for benefit fraud. She left her trademark pink and sparkles at home, instead opting for a sober top-to-toe black ensemble (albeit with a leopard print kicker). Paris Hilton Yet another monochrome dress from Paris Hilton (albeit a more cleavage-baring one), when she stood before a court charged with cocaine possession in September 2010. Britney Spears We know that style in LA is laid-back, but we’re pretty sure it’s still de rigeur to dress up – at least a bit – for court. The sartorially hapless Britney Spears fell short of the mark when she wore this patterned dress with brown knee-high boots and a mismatching white handbag to thrash out custody arrangements with her ex-husband Kevin Federline in 2007. Naomi Campbell Facing assault charges for allegedly striking her housekeeper Ana Scolavino with her cell phone (a charge to which she later pleaded guilty), Naomi Campbell chose a November 2006 court appearance to debut a new razor-sharp bob. She teamed it with a demure black bow-front dress and black jacket – sparking an international media frenzy. Katie Price We’ll bet you never knew it was possible for a classic white shirt and black trousers to be a fashion faux pas. Katie Price achieved the nigh-on sartorially impossible when she put a Vegas showgirl spin on the look for a High Court hearing in her libel case against the News Of The World – along with then-hubby Peter Andre – in July 2008. Paris Hilton Hold up! Paris Hilton swerved from her usual courthouse style in May 2007, shunning her trademark dresses for a smart trousers, shirt and jacket ensemble. Lindsay Lohan When Lindsay Lohan rejected a plea deal for grand theft at the Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this month, she raised eyebrows again when she appeared before the judge in a $725 beige leather Raquel Allegra dress. Kelly Rutherford It’s little wonder that so many celebrities defer to an all-black look when the occasion calls for smart and conservative. Gossip Girl star Kelly Rutherford joined the club in January 2009 when she attended Santa Monica Superior Court for a child-custody hearing with her estranged husband Daniel Giersch over their son, Hermes. She was four months pregnant at the time. Lindsay Lohan By the time Lindsay Lohan appeared in court in November 2011 for violating her probation, she had appropriate court dressing down-pat in this Marilyn Monroe-esque spotted day dress. It worked – despite ordering her to serve 30 days in jail, the lenient judge deferred her sentence so LiLo could complete a lucrative shoot for Playboy. Jemima Khan Jemima Khan followed the magic all-black formula earlier this year when she attended Belmarsh Magistrates' Court with Tony Benn for the highly-publicised extradition trial of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Chloe Madeley Arriving at Hendon Magistrates' Court in London to hear charges of drink-driving in September 2009, Chloe Madeley wore a sombre black dress teamed with black pumps and an oversized handbag – a smart choice, we think.0 comments to "• 20 Celebrity Court Style"
